Central Madrid still runs businesses that predate the light bulb. This private walk connects them: churros at San Ginés, the 16th-century Farmacia de la Reina Madre, Botín — the world's oldest restaurant — and tapas along the way.

Every city has old buildings; Madrid has old businesses — shops where the fourth or fifth generation is still behind the counter. This walk treats them as the museum they quietly are.

It opens with churros and chocolate at San Ginés, pouring since the 19th century, and moves through the survivors: the Farmacia de la Reina Madre, founded in the 16th century and once mixing remedies for royalty; Botín, holder of the Guinness record as the world's oldest restaurant; Casa Hernanz, hand-making espadrilles since 1840; the Guitarras Ramírez workshop; and Sombrerería Medrano, still blocking hats to order.

Tapas stops punctuate the route. For travelers who prefer their history still open for business.

HOW IT RUNS

Four hours inside the Madrid that continues to exist — where history is not behind glass, but still open for business.

Hotel pick-up. Your guide meets you at your hotel and takes you into Madrid's historic center, where centuries-old businesses still operate behind their original façades.

 

The walk begins. Over approximately four hours on foot, you follow a flat, compact route through Madrid's oldest streets, moving at a relaxed pace designed for stopping, looking and stepping inside places most visitors pass by.

Madrid through its businesses. You'll enter historic shops, artisan workshops and family-run establishments where traditions continue across generations — from San Ginés and Botín to specialist craftspeople preserving skills that have defined the city for centuries.

Food along the way. The tastings are woven naturally into the story of the neighborhood: churros and chocolate to begin, followed by traditional tapas at historic venues along the route.

 

A living Madrid experience. These are not museum displays but working businesses still serving locals today. Exact stops may vary depending on opening hours, with your guide adapting the route to make the most of your visit.

  • The route adapts to shop opening hours and your group's interests. Please note that some historic shops may close at midday or on certain days.

  • A flat walking route through central Madrid, including some cobbled streets, at a relaxed browsing pace. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Please share dietary restrictions at the time of booking so tastings can be adapted to your needs.

Cancellation Policy

Free cancellation up to 7 days before the scheduled date (excluding monument/attraction tickets, which are non-refundable). An optional cancellation insurance is available during booking, allowing cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund (excluding tickets where applicable).

Operator cancellations due to weather or unforeseen circumstances are fully refundable. No-shows will be charged the full price.
