Regulated since 1756, the Alto Douro is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, and its slopes are still cut into narrow schist terraces above the river. It sits roughly 100 km east of Porto, so it needs a full day, and any wine region raises the same question: who drives back? The vehicle is private from your hotel door and back, so everyone at the table can accept the next pour. The day shows the valley twice: from the water, where the terraces are easiest to read, and over a lunch matched course by course to regional wines. It suits couples and small groups of friends or family who would rather give the Douro one whole, unhurried day. The Port comes last, poured in the same valley where its grapes were picked.

Timing

A Douro day runs on fixed slots: the boat departure, the winery's lunch sitting and the tasting, spread across a valley roughly 100 km from Porto. All three are reserved and sequenced before your pickup, with the same private vehicle at each stop, so the timing is already settled before you leave the hotel.

Good to Know

  • Walking & physical level: easy, with light walking, mostly boarding the boat and moving around the winery. Much of the day is spent in the vehicle, on the boat or at the table. Flat shoes are best on deck.

  • Best time to visit: late September to early October is harvest season in the Douro. April to June brings green vines and milder weather. July and August can be very hot, so bring a hat and sun protection for the boat.

Cancellation Policy

Free cancellation up to 7 days before the scheduled date (excluding monument/attraction tickets, which are non-refundable). An optional cancellation insurance is available during booking, allowing cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund (excluding tickets where applicable).

Operator cancellations due to weather or unforeseen circumstances are fully refundable. No-shows will be charged the full price.
