This private tuk tuk tour covers Lisbon's old hills in three hours, from Alfama up to São Jorge Castle and down to Rossio Square, with a driver guide narrating the city as you ride.


 


 

In 1755 an earthquake leveled most of Lisbon but largely spared Alfama, which is why its streets still follow a medieval plan: steep, narrow and rarely straight. A tuk tuk fits where coaches can't, turning the climb to São Jorge Castle and the miradouros above the Tagus into part of the ride. Tastings break up the route, and your driver guide fills the gaps between them with the stories behind each hill. It suits a first visit to Lisbon, and families with children over seven who would rather see the old town than trudge it. By the end, the hills that looked daunting from the Baixa will have turned into a map you can read.

How It Runs

Alfama's gradients and one-lane streets make Lisbon's old center tiring on foot and out of reach for coaches. Your driver guide takes both the wheel and the commentary, linking viewpoints, landmarks and four tasting stops into a single three-hour loop, with no tram queues or transfers between them.

Hotel pickup · Central Lisbon: your driver guide collects you at your hotel, and the tuk tuk heads straight for the old town.

Alfama · Lisbon's oldest quarter: the tuk tuk climbs lanes laid out long before motor traffic, while your guide explains how the neighborhood survived the 1755 earthquake when most of the city didn't.

São Jorge Castle & the miradouros: stops at the top of the hill for views over Alfama's rooftops and the Tagus. Castle entry is not included. 

Tasting stops · along the route: pastel de nata, pastel de bacalhau, ginjinha and vinho verde, spread across the loop so each one comes with a pause. 

Rossio Square & the Baixa: the descent into the flat grid of streets rebuilt after 1755, a clear contrast with the tangle of Alfama above.

Return · Hotel drop-off: the tuk tuk takes you back to your hotel in central Lisbon.

Good to Know

  • Ideal for: first-time visitors to Lisbon, couples, and families with children aged 7 and over who want the old town's hills without covering them on foot.

  • Languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish; other languages on request.

  • Children: suitable from 7 years old.

  • Walking: minimal, with short stretches on foot at viewpoints and tasting stops. Lisbon's limestone pavement (calçada) can be slippery, so shoes with some grip are worth it.

  • Alcohol: ginjinha and vinho verde are alcoholic. Let us know when booking if anyone in your group doesn't drink, including younger travelers, and we'll arrange an alternative.

  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October bring mild temperatures. In July and August, mornings and late afternoons are more comfortable in an open vehicle. November to March is Lisbon's rainy season.

  • Customization: the route can be adjusted around your interests.

  • Dietary requirements: let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies when booking, and the tastings will be adapted.

Cancellation Policy

Free cancellation up to 7 days before the scheduled date (excluding monument/attraction tickets, which are non-refundable). An optional cancellation insurance is available during booking, allowing cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund (excluding tickets where applicable).

Operator cancellations due to weather or unforeseen circumstances are fully refundable. No-shows will be charged the full price.
