At over 2,000 years old, the "Tule tree" (Arbol del Tule) remains among the oldest living beings in the world. With a massive 33-foot (10-meter) diameter trunk, it is also considered by many to be the broadest tree on the planet. Just look at an adult standing next to it to truly grasp its scale!
The appearance of this giant is that of multiple trunks fused together. However, recent DNA tests suggest that it is, in fact, a single individual tree. The circumference of the trunk is an amazing 177 feet (54 meters).
Various contortions of the trunk give the appearance of the faces of goblins and monsters. In fact, if you visit, you will still be offered a tour of the tree by local school children—an official project—who will show you all manner of creatures hiding in the bark, including elephants and jaguars. If you look closely at the spooky figures trapped in the wood, you'll see the magic of this ancient specimen.
This great ahuehuete (Montezuma cypress) is still alive and growing, with dense foliage reaching 141 feet (43 meters) into the sky. While there are ongoing concerns about its future well-being, its legacy as a natural wonder is undisputed.
At World Experience, we believe that the same magic found in the Arbol del Tule exists in the hidden corners of Spain and Portugal. Our mission is to connect travelers with these timeless stories through authentic, high-quality tours.
