Four hours in Alfama, Lisbon's oldest neighborhood: petiscos with Portuguese wines and cheeses along the way, the Graça viewpoint, and a full traditional dinner with live fado to close.

Alfama is where much of fado's story began, in taverns tucked into the lanes below São Jorge Castle, and this evening is built around the music and the food that go with it. Your guide leads the walk uphill through the neighborhood. Along the way you stop for petiscos with Portuguese wines and cheeses and pass the church of São Vicente de Fora, and the climb ends at the Graça viewpoint. Dinner is a traditional Portuguese meal with a live fado performance. It is made for couples and adult travelers who want Lisbon's food, music and oldest streets in a single evening, planned end to end. Graça is the last climb of the night; after that, the only thing left is to sit down and listen.

How It Runs

Alfama was never laid out on a grid, so the order of the evening matters as much as the stops. Your guide works this neighborhood regularly and sequences it as a single route: the tastings spaced along the climb, the viewpoints at the top, and dinner and fado held for the end.


 

Hotel meeting · Central Lisbon — Your guide meets you at your hotel in central Lisbon, and the walk to Alfama starts from there.

Alfama on foot — The route works up through the lanes and stairways of Lisbon's oldest quarter. Your guide covers how fado took shape here and points out the street art and Art Deco façades along the way.

Petiscos, wine & cheese · Alfama — Tastings of Portuguese petiscos, wines and cheeses along the walk, the neighborhood's own way of eating before dinner.

São Vicente de Fora — A visit to the late-Renaissance church on the eastern edge of Alfama.

Miradouro da Graça — The highest point of the route, looking out over the castle, downtown and the river.

Dinner & live fado — A full traditional Portuguese dinner in a restaurant with a live fado performance in the dining room, shared with other guests. The tour ends after dinner.

  • Walking: Alfama is hilly, with cobblestone lanes and long flights of stairs. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
  • Fado performance: the fado is performed live in the restaurant's dining room, shared with other diners. It is customary to stay quiet while the songs are sung.
  • Best time to visit: spring and early autumn bring mild evenings for walking. Summer evenings are warm, with late sunsets. In winter, evenings are cooler and the cobblestones can be slippery after rain.
  • Dietary requirements: let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies when booking, and the tastings and dinner can be adapted.
  • Customization: as a private tour, the pace and route can be adjusted to your group on request.

Free cancellation up to 7 days before the scheduled date (excluding monument/attraction tickets, which are non-refundable). An optional cancellation insurance is available during booking, allowing cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund (excluding tickets where applicable).

Operator cancellations due to weather or unforeseen circumstances are fully refundable. No-shows will be charged the full price.
